Innovative Young Minds (IYM) for Y11 & 12 Girls

Posted on October 28, 2020

Innovative Young Minds (IYM) is again being held in 2021. IYM offers young women in years 11 and 12 the opportunity to learn about the wide range of research and career opportunities available in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing). IYM seeks to encourage diversity in New Zealand’s science and technology industry by inspiring a new generation of innovators and industry leaders. It is an exciting opportunity in 2021 for young women keen to explore career opportunities in science and technology. You can learn more about IYM on our website: www.iym.org.nz.

This year, our traditional one-week residential programme (which has been running since 2017) was cancelled this year due to Covid-19. However, we quickly adapted and ran a successful IYM Online 2020 programme with 98 participants. In 2021, IYM again plans to deliver a virtual programme for young women in Years 11 and 12 from around New Zealand. IYM Online 2021 will present the many opportunities available in STEMM through virtual tours, research and career showcases, interactive digital technology experiences and industry expert mentor sessions.

We are looking for students who show potential in STEMM subjects, not necessarily those who have performed at the top of their class in the past. We want to inspire students that have not had exposure to STEMM subjects previously or who need to build their confidence to pursue these subjects further. IYM Online will also give these young women the opportunity to make lasting friendships with others who share a passion for STEMM!

Next year, IYM Online 2021 will take place in the first week of the April school holidays over five half-day sessions. Places are limited to 100 and there is a small participation fee of $30. Applications open on 1 November 2020 and close on 15 March 2021. Students register online at www.iym.org.nz from this Sunday. If you require assistance with the programme fee, please get in touch as we may be able to assist with this.
